Insect Genomics Applied to Integrated Pest Management

Professor Dr. Diogo Cavalcanti Cabral de Mello

Description

Structural genomics provides the foundation for understanding the composition and organization of genomes. In insects, this is particularly important due to their morphological, behavioral, and ecological diversity. With advances in next-generation sequencing technologies, it has become possible to explore the structural components of the genome in depth, from coding genes to non-coding regions and repetitive elements, offering insights into evolution, adaptation, and potential for genetic management. In this context, the course will focus on (1) Study of the organization and genomic architecture of insects. (2) Principles and methods of genome sequencing, assembly, and annotation. (3) Analysis of structural genomic elements such as genes, introns, exons, regulatory regions, repetitive elements, and sex chromosomes. (4) Applications of structural genomics in evolutionary biology and integrated pest management.
