Description
Nutrition: transformations in the study of insect nutrition; the logic of nutritional ecology; scope and implications of the study of nutritional ecology; general principles of insect nutrition; nutritional requirements of insects (amino acids, proteins, vitamins, mineral salts, carbohydrates, sterols, lipids, nucleic acids); artificial diets and mass rearing of insects (importance, history, terminology, types of artificial diets, physical, chemical, and biological requirements for feeding, role of symbionts, examples); quality control in mass rearing. Consumption and utilization of food by insects; nutritional indices to measure food consumption and utilization; experimental techniques; quantity of food consumed; significance of the different nutritional indices; methods for measuring food consumption and utilization by insects; interpretation of nutritional index values; consumption and utilization of food for larval growth and for reproduction and dispersal of adults. Metabolism in insects: carbohydrates, lipids, sterols, vitamins, amino acids, and proteins. Evolution of phytophagous insects and their feeding mechanisms and regulation of feeding behavior; feeding habits of insects. Insect rearing techniques: lepidopterans, aphids, stored product pests, chrysomelids (Diabrotica), predators, and parasitoids. Installation of laboratories for biological studies with insects; macro- and microclimatic requirements for insect development.
