The Graduate Program in Agronomy – Agricultural Entomology (PPGEA) has as its main objective the training of highly skilled professionals at the Master’s and Doctoral levels to work in teaching and to develop basic and applied research in the area of Entomology within the Agricultural Sciences. PPGEA students come from Research Institutions or Public and Private Universities in Brazil and throughout Latin America.
Presentation
The Agricultural Entomology Graduate Program is affiliated with the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences (FCAV), at the Jaboticabal Campus, a unit of São Paulo State University “Julio de Mesquita Filho” (UNESP).
The Program offers scholarships for the Master’s (up to 2 years) and Doctorate (up to 3 years), but it also encourages students and their advisors to secure additional funding from national and international research funding agencies. Several projects have been funded by FAPESP and many students have already carried out (or are currently conducting) part of their research abroad through the Sandwich Scholarship.
Research and Teaching activities are carried out primarily in the Department of Plant Protection and, occasionally, in other Departments on Campus, at the Teaching and Research Farm, and in other Laboratories and Experimental Fields throughout the country. The research undertaken seeks to advance knowledge in entomology and provide solutions to plant health problems, with emphasis on Integrated Pest Management. Interaction with undergraduate teaching is a strength of the program through support of undergraduate research projects. The program also has strong ties with the community, characterized by extension activities, technical visits, and the organization of field days, symposia, and lectures for farmers, extension agents, and other interested professionals. Student participation is essential in the learning process, including the involvement of undergraduate, graduate, and visiting students from other institutions in Brazil and abroad.
The activities of the Agricultural Entomology Graduate Program began in 1988, with the first selection of students for the Master’s level. In 1997, the first Doctoral students were admitted. Both levels are accredited by the National Education Council (Ordinance No. 2.878, 08/24/2005 CNE). Currently, the program has been evaluated with a score of 5 within the DATACAPES Continuous Evaluation System.
Students are required to devote themselves exclusively to the course, under the supervision of an advisor. Together, they develop a work plan according to the student’s interests and in line with the objectives of the program.
PPGEA also seeks to support initiatives as well as offer opportunities for professional development to both faculty and students, in order to continuously achieve excellence in the training of graduate students.
